Not recommended for those with heart
and walking
problems - very steep.

Made famous by the song by
Wings:-
Mull
of Kintyre
A modern version: -
Mull
of Kintyre

From Southend Kintyre, the lighthouse is
8 miles along a single track.
Vehicles are left at the top in a car park overlooking the
lighthouse, which is 1 mile down the hill.
Wrap up warm as it can be very windy, you won't need them on the
way back ! Well worth the walk down and the slow steady climb back
up.

Since 1788 a lighthouse has
warned shipping to keep well away from the area, notorious for it’s
tidal currents and turbulent seas.
The keepers houses date from 1857 and 1883.
This is an unmanned lighthouse, so the beam
constantly turns - day and night |

The lighthouse
stands on the edge of a 300 ft cliff
This view was taken beside the lighthouse
looking North. |
| This view was taken
beside the lighthouse looking South. Opposite (West) on a
clear day you should see Ireland, which is only 12 miles away. |

In 1994 a Chinook
helicopter carrying security personnel from Northern Ireland (just
12 miles away) inexplicably flew straight into the Mull of Kintyre
killing the 29 members on board.
The monument is near the top. How unfortunate they were not to
clear the cliffs.
|
| On your return journey
you will see Sheep and Sanda Islands on your right. Sanda being
the larger island. |

|
Another outstanding view
on the way back from the lighthouse, the coastal road back to
Campbeltown gives a good opportunity for more scenery. |
