High on the hill above Oban is a
replica of the Coliseum in Rome,
this is McCaig's Tower or McCaig's Folly.
Built between 1897 and 1900, it was commissioned by John McCaig to
provide local employment and a memorial to his family. There is a steep climb to the top of the hill, a
couple of benches offer a welcome rest to get your breath back. At
the top views make it all worth while, on a clear day Mull can be
seen.
Oban has a busy shopping centre, offering visitors plenty of
opportunity to purchase those "tartan souvenirs" as well
as browsing around some unusual shops.

Plenty of ferries leave Oban for the following islands: Colonsay,
Coll, Tiree, Mull, Lismore, Barra and South Uist. There are also
small boats offering seal spotting trips.
You need to get up early to visit Mull, Iona
and Staffa on a combined ferry and coach day-trip from Oban, it
does make a rather long day, but I am told it is worth it.
