Approach Skipness from Claonaig,
where the ferry terminal for Arran is found. Go through the village,
the entrance to the Castle is at the end of the road. There is
a largish car park opposite the entrance on your left, you then
have a pleasant walk down to the castle or for those unable to
walk far, drive through the gates and down to the small Castle car
park.
Skipness Castle was built in 13th
Century. There is access to several rooms from a stone staircase. A wooden and stone staircase continues up into
the tower if you have a head for heights, can be a little dark on
the way back down.
Views from the top of Skipness Castle
are worth the climb. To the left you will see the ruins of
Kilbrannan Chapel, which has some interesting carved medieval
tombstones protected by wooden cases. Arran
can be seen on the horizon.

There are several walks around the
grounds - woodland, hill and coastal walks. The Bluebell wood is best
visited in April/May. At the top of the Castle you can see Skipness
House & the Seafood cabin, it also gives a good
overall view of Kintyre from this point. |
